Field Notes · The Method

Four movements, one number.

Pavers rarely fail; bases do. Hill Country clay swells with October rain and shrinks through August, and any surface not built for that motion will telegraph it within two winters. So we spend our patience below grade — where nobody sees it, and everybody feels it.

I.

Site Study

We walk the property, probe for expansive clay, shoot grades with a laser level, and photograph what the water does when it rains. Nothing is drawn until the ground is understood.

II.

Design & Materials

A scaled plan on your table, actual stone samples in your hands, and one fixed number — not an estimate that grows. Most designs are ready within ten days.

III.

Installation

Excavate eight to ten inches. Compact road base in two-inch lifts to 95% density. Screed, lay, cut, compact again, sweep polymeric sand into every joint. Then compact once more.

IV.

The Walkthrough

We hose-test the drainage in front of you, walk every edge together, and register your 25-year craftsmanship warranty before the trailer leaves the curb.

The Materials Room

Stone, on the record.

Three of the fourteen materials in our sample library. All samples travel to you.

Swatch No. 1

Belgian Cobble

Tumbled clay pavers in an autumn blend — russet, umber, charcoal — that read like a street in Bruges and wear like one, too. Color runs through the full body of the stone; a chipped corner fifty years from now will match.

From $19 / sq ft installed · Best for driveways & courtyards

Swatch No. 2

Silver Travertine

Quarried limestone with the veining of parchment, honed and unfilled. It stays roughly 20° cooler than concrete in July sun, which in Texas is not poetry — it is the difference between using a pool deck and looking at one.

From $22 / sq ft installed · Best for pool decks & terraces

Swatch No. 3

Permeable Paver

Architectural concrete with widened joints of open-graded stone. A hard surface that drinks a two-inch rain instead of shedding it at your foundation — and qualifies for City of Austin drainage credit.

From $15 / sq ft installed · Best for drives & motor courts

They rebuilt our courtyard the way an editor rebuilds a sentence — nothing extra, everything in its place. Two summers of parties later, not one paver has moved.

— Marianne K., Barton Hills

“The crew compacted the base for two full days before a single stone went down. That’s when I knew.”

— David & Priya R., Westlake

“Our travertine deck is somehow cooler than the lawn. My kids stopped wearing sandals to the pool.”

— Tom H., Dripping Springs
